The popular music festival, Coachella, is fast approaching and if you are going to be attending then you need check out these seven tips on how to keep your iPhone’s battery from dying during your favorite artist’s set. Not going to Coachella? That’s ok, these tips, which were put together by the minds at Färbe Technik and BestTechie, can still help you with eeking out every last drop of juice you can get from your phone’s battery.

  1. iphone-6-chargingIdentify What is Draining the Battery: Updates to iOS 8 allow Apple users to see a breakdown of what apps are using the most power. To find out which apps are draining your device’s battery go to Settings > General > Usage > Battery Usage. Armed with this knowledge you can close it by swiping up in the multi-tasking view or even [temporarily] delete the app.
  2. Turn Off App Notifications: Some apps spam users with unimportant news by notifying them either on the home screen or in the notification center. Control which apps send you notifications by going to Settings > Notification Center and tap on any apps you don’t want notifications from.
  3. Reduce Background Refreshing: Allowing apps to refresh themselves drains the iPhone battery more than anything (it can also increase your data usage). Most users think power is preserved by closing apps, but it is important to turn off background apps by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
  4. Refrain from Using Animations: Dynamic backgrounds and parallax ‘3D’ effects are fun to look at but drain the battery much quicker than static images. Go to Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness then choose ‘Wallpaper’ and turn ‘Reduce Motion’ on in Settings > General > Accessibility.
  5. Set iPhone to Auto-Lock: Setting the iPhone to automatically sleep allows for the battery to be preserved since less power is used to run the screen or other services. Go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock and choose 1 or 2 minutes.
  6. Disable Location Services: Letting apps access your location can cause significantly battery drain. You can disable Location Services by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and toggling it Off. If you don’t want to completely disable Location Services, you can select which apps can access your location as well as when they can access your location from the same Location Services settings page.
  7. Disable Bluetooth & WiFi: By disabling Bluetooth and WiFi you can help preserve that precious battery life because your iPhone will not be looking to connect to new devices and/or trying to connect to a WiFi network. You can disable both in the Settings or via Control Center.
  8. BONUS TIP–Use Airplane Mode When Charging: If you happen to luck out and have a chance to charge your iPhone at some point in the day, put it in Airplane Mode. It will charge much, much faster. You can enable Airplane Mode in Settings or via Control Center.

There you have it. Seven, well, eight with the bonus, tips on how to keep your iPhone’s battery from an untimely death. All of those tips are free, but if you are willing to spend some cash to keep your iPhone chugging along then you might want to consider looking at Färbe Technik’s products. The company has an iPhone 6 External Battery Case that adds an additional 255 hours stand-by time, 8 hours talk time, 40 hours audio time, 8 hours 3G surfing time, and 10 hours of video time. If you don’t want to add a case to your iPhone, they have other options such as the Dual USB Mobile Power Bank that can charge two devices at once with a 12,000mAh battery.

Another company whose products I like is Mophie, which also has an external battery case as well as its Powerstation XL which can charge up to two devices at once with a 12,000mAh battery.
