Talking tech since 2003

Why wait for Mobile World Congress to reveal great new mobile phones? Motorola isn’t, as the Lenovo-subsidiary today sent a number of all new Moto E handsets to tech journalists around the country. The new device packs a mid-range wallop at budget-friendly prices, going for a mere $150 unlocked. This is the new Android phone to beat, and it’s available for purchase right now.

The new Moto E is a follow-up to a phone by the same name from last year, and it improves in all the areas that matter. While last year’s model could only provide 3G data coverage, the new Moto E can jump onto 4G LTE networks. It’s got a faster processor and twice as much internal storage, too – a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 and 8 GB, which is expandable via microSD. The screen’s a bit bigger at 4.5 inches, but other than that, the Moto E doesn’t reinvent the wheel. But all those specs, plus 1 GB of RAM, a bigger battery, and the latest version of Android make the Moto E a pretty amazing value.

Why does the Moto E matter, when we’ve got the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the HTC One M9 right around the corner? Because Motorola has made an extremely affordable phone that doesn’t compromise on quality. It does just about everything someone might want out of a phone, and if it catches on, it could send a clear message to OEMs about what users really want out of their Android phones.

To me, it’s tempting because it’s a cheap way to enjoy stock Android. If nothing else, it shows that Motorola is still in Google’s corner despite being sent over to Lenovo last year. Let’s hope that Motorola has even more up its sleeve over the next few months…
