Talking tech since 2003

Tomorrow, Microsoft will be holding an event to unveil the next pieces of its Windows 10 strategy. Since late last year, Microsoft has been working with users to shake the kinks out of Windows 10, via a Technical Preview that went live months before the planned consumer release of the new operating system. According to a report on ZDNet, it seems as though Microsoft will be going that same route for its mobile platform, as it’s expected to release a preview of Windows 10 mobile next month.

According to the post, while tomorrow’s event will offer up lots of information on Windows 10’s next steps, we won’t see the mobile preview hit Windows Phones until February. As to what form that new mobile focused OS will take isn’t quite clear, but the post does say that it’s expected to run on both smaller tablets with Intel and ARM CPUs, as well as mobile phones.

So what’s on tap for tomorrow’s event, which will apparently focus on the main version of Windows 10? According to the post, we’ll learn more about how Windows 10 is built on “a single, common ‘core’ (known internally as ‘OneCore’) that will work across a variety of devices.” While we won’t necessarily get all the details about Windows 10 Mobile this week, we’ll get inklings as to how it’ll fit into Microsoft’s bigger picture.

Moreover, Microsoft will allegedly show off its touch-optimized version of Office, as well as something called “Project B,” a “Windows gaming ‘helmet’”. That last one sounds interesting, and not at all surprising. After all, Google has Cardboard, Samsung has Gear VR, Sony has Project Morpheus, and Facebook has Oculus and the Rift – why shouldn’t Microsoft have its own gaming wearable too?

If you want to follow along with Microsoft as the execs deliver the keynote address, be sure to direct your browser to this link at noon, Eastern (9 a.m., Pacific) tomorrow. Should be interesting…
