Talking tech since 2003

Back when Foursquare was both a check-in app and a venue finder, it was limited to smartphones only. And that made a lot of sense — who is carrying their iPad around looking for a good dinner spot? Since then, however, Foursquare split, separating its functionality into two apps: Foursquare and Swarm. Foursquare handles the Yelp-type reviews and ratings, and Swarm does check-ins.

Foursquare announced the app via its blog, stating that it’s a great way to plot out your travels. An excerpt from the blog post follows:

So next time you’re trying to figure out what to do for your next trip or even just next weekend, fire up Foursquare. It’s focused on helping you plan smarter. Choose your city, and you’ll get a personalized list of all the great places there. And, with one-tap, you can easily save anything you like to your dream itinerary.

The move makes a lot of sense for Foursquare, especially if it wants the app to be used in a different manner than most old-school users are accustomed to. Tablet apps are used quite a bit in chill-on-the-couch scenarios, so if Foursquare wants users to lounge around and plan out their dining locations for the future, offering a tablet-specific build can help steer its base in that direction.

And, since you’re all probably wondering, no — there will not be a Swarm app built for the iPad. That news comes straight from the company’s chief revenue officer, Steven Rosenblatt.
