Talking tech since 2003

The market is full of iPhone cases, iPhone battery packs, and chargers for— you guessed it — the iPhone. But until the Prong PWR Case came along, I hadn’t seen a product roll all three of those things into one.

prong-pwr-caseThe Prong PWR is a case. Your iPhone snaps into it, and the Prong protects it from drops and other disasters. The Prong is also a supplementary battery for the iPhone, adding extra life to the smartphone so that it can actually get through the day (good luck doing that without an external battery). And you wouldn’t know this until you turn the Prong around, but it’s also a charger. A plug on the back of the case can be flipped, allowing you to plug the Prong PWR into a wall and charge your iPhone.

Now, there are some caveats. Should you plug the Prong PWR into a wall, your iPhone is obviously going to be attached to it. As you can see in the photo, using your iPhone while it charges this way will be a bit more difficult than if you were using a cable. If you’re someone who uses your iPhone a lot during the day while it charges, this setup probably isn’t going to work for you. But there’s no denying that, if you’re in desperate need of a charge and the Prong is all you have, it’s going to do in that pinch.

There’s also the weight the Prong PWR is going to add to your iPhone. Granted, the iPhone is ridiculously light right now, and if you’ve ever held a larger Android smartphone, you know the difference between the two is night and day. But know that, with a case, a battery and a plug for charging, your iPhone is going to get a bit heavier. The trade-off is probably worth it, but it’s something to consider.

And the PWR only works with the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s. Sorry, iPhone 4/4s owners, but you’re out of luck here.

The case is going to come in several colors. White and black are available, if you want the case to match your phone entirely. There are also some combos: pink/white and blue/black. Those with the gold iPhone, I’m sorry; there’s no gold Prong case. You’re probably better off sticking with the white.

The Prong PWR is set to launch at Best Buy this summer at a price of $79.99, but you can visit the company’s website to pre-order for $65; a $15 discount.

We’re set to get a review unit as soon as they’re available, and then we’ll be able to dive in and really put this product through its paces. Keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, are you interested in what the Prong PWR is offering? Sound off below in the comments.
