Talking tech since 2003

If there is one type of press release or review request I get a lot of, there is no doubt that I would put iPhone accessories towards the top of the list.  However, while I do get a lot of them, it’s rare that I take up offer to review the product and/or share the news.  Why?  Well, for one, many of the accessories are so similar, if you have seen one iPhone case chances are you have seen them all type of mentality.  How different can they really be?  So I try not to bore you guys with that type of stuff.

That being said, I recently received a press release from an iPhone case accessory (they tell me they have more products in the pipeline) company.  I open the email expecting to see the same old, same old.  But to my surprise what I saw was something new.  So I reply asking for a review unit and they happily oblige, a few days later a box appears at my doorstep.  It is the black Crimson Case for iPhone 4.  And it’s my favorite iPhone case to date.

The Crimson cases appear to be inspired by Apple’s iPhone 4 Bumper case because the case itself wraps around the outside of the phone (i.e. like the Bumper).  But this case isn’t rubber or plastic — no no, it’s “Aircraft-grade” aluminum.  That may seem like a marketing gimmick, but after seeing and feeling the material in person I can assure you this is not a flimsy case.  Surpsingly, it does not weigh down the case or the iPhone.  The Crimson case weighs in a mere 19 grams.  That’s almost like holding air.

In order to put the case on the iPhone, you need to use an allen wrench (included with the case) to unscrew the four screws (they also provide two extra screws), insert the iPhone into place, and then screw the screws back in.  Granted, it’s not as easy as snap-in / snap-out, but at least you know it’s not going to fall off.  Come to think of it, it is also makes it easier to take it off the iPhone too.  I was always worried about my Bumper snapping when taking it off the phone.

The Crimson case also comes with one set of anti-fingerprint (front / rear) Crimson Premium Film Surface Protectors, otherwise known as, screen protectors.

I really like the Crimson case because it does not block or obstruct access to any part of the phone that I would want to use or be seen.  A lot of cases completely block the back of the iPhone and I don’t know about you but, I like the Apple logo to be shown off on the back of the phone.  Wait, was that a bit too fanboyish?  Be honest (in the comments).

One thing of note, I did notice it takes a bit of getting used to when holding the iPhone up to your ear while on the phone (using the Crimson case).  The first few times you put it up to your ear, it feels a bit weird.  However, it didn’t take too long to get used to it.

Regardless, the Crimson case is a solid case (both figuratively and literally).  The case currently is available in Black, Silver, Red, and Blue.  The case retails for $39.95 and while I realize it may be a bit much for some people, I still would recommend you at least consider it.
