Talking tech since 2003

In the land before FaceTime, I would (and did) argue, that it did not make sense for Apple to implement a camera in the iPod Touch.  However, with the introduction of FaceTime on the iPhone 4, I have changed my tune.  This would be the perfect time for Apple to put a camera into the iPod Touch.  Apple would become the de facto company associated with video calling.  Even though the technology has been around for years, no one has implemented it with the seamlessness and simplicity that Apple has.

Now tack on the seamless experience with a device (the iPod) that has sold over 260,000,000 units as of April 2010.  Granted while not all of the units sold were iPod Touch’s it is still one of the most popular iPod lines to date and with FaceTime enabled on them, I would certainly expect the number of iPod Touch sales to rise.  What does this mean though?  It means, Apple will be in an extremely nice position to dominate the video calling space.

It has become quite clear to me that FaceTime is going to be something Apple will be touting in future devices for years to come.  If you haven’t figured that out by now just look at all the FaceTime commercials on television these days.  It is quite apparent they are trying to sell people on this idea – hook, line, and sinker.  I do not think they would make sure a big deal out of a feature if they weren’t planning on implementing it in other products as well.  Who knows.  Could we eventually see a FaceTime version for Mac OS X?  I wouldn’t dismiss the idea.  It is also important to note that the iPod Touch is cheaper than the iPhone 4 and also doesn’t come with an AT&T plan, which means it is an easier purchase for some people.

What would be interesting though is if Apple offers the iPod Touch with the option for an AT&T data plan similar to that of the iPad.  Where you can purchase an AT&T data plan on a month to month basis.  This is something that would be amazing for iPod Touch owners, not only from a FaceTime perspective but also just being able to access the web on the go from their iPod.  If something like this doesn’t happen this year, I expect it to happen in the next couple of years or at least once Apple can get AT&T to allow FaceTime over 3G (something iPhone owners are also waiting for).

I really think we will see the iPod Touch with a camera and FaceTime capabilities come September.  After all, that is when they usually release the new ones.  It may be announced as early as two weeks from now though.  Supposedly there will be an Apple event between August 14-16th.  What do you think?  Would you like to see an iPod Touch with a camera and FaceTime abilities?
