Talking tech since 2003

After a few more hours of playing with Ubuntu 8.04 Beta I was able to get my dual monitors working.  What I ended up doing was installing nvidia-settings, however, for some reason that wasn’t able to save the xorg.conf file to /etc/X11/, so I copied the xorg.conf to xorg.conf.backup and then copied the nvidia-settings preview (what would be the new contents of xorg.conf) and just replaced my current xorg.conf with that those contents, saved it, and restarted X. Logged back in and it was working.  Okay, deep breath now.  So I got the dual monitor issue worked out, still not as easy as I would have liked but nonetheless I must admit it was not as bad as it could have been.

Alright so the Google Talk issue, I finally got it to compile what I needed according to this thread, however, for some reason I have yet to find out it was unable to make and make install – it just would error.  So I went searching for some answers, while I was searching I thought to myself “why don’t I just try installing PSI?”  Google Talk is based of the Jabber protocol, so I installed PSI, Googled for the Google Talk server settings – host: talk.google.com, port: 2553 and you also need the QCA-SSL plugin installed, as it is required by Psi to support SSL and TLS connections (which is required by Google Talk).  I go to download the plugin and all of the sudden everything just completely locked up just as I was about to download the plugin so I could try and get it working.  I ended up having to hard reboot at which point I ended up going back to Windows.

Now do not get me wrong, I’m not trying to convey the point Windows doesn’t lock up (that would be silly) – this post was simply to share my experiences.  I will definitely try again to get this sorted and I’ll keep you updated, but until then…
